Serious anxiety disorders affect over 40 million Americans; however, since only a portion of those affected by anxiety seek treatment, estimates are that the true number might be twice as high. Add those who are suffering from moderate or persistent stress and the number of adults affected by anxiety grow to quite a large majority.
Calm is a combination of five naturally occurring nutrients which act as nature’s most effective biochemical stress and anxiety blockers. None of the ingredients are hormones such as melatonin or depressants such as kava or valerian.
Magnolia Bark: Magnolia bark (Magnolia officinalis) is a traditional Chinese medicine used since A.D. 100 for treating emotional distress. Magnolia bark is rich in two biphenol compounds, magnolol and honokiol, which create the primary anti-stress and cortisol-lowering effects of the plant. Medical research has proven that both magnolol and honokiol possess powerful brain chemistry enhancing benefits via their actions in modulating the activity of various neurotransmitters and related enzymes in the brain (i.e. increased choline acetyltransferase activity, inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, and increased acetylcholine release).
Additionally, numerous animal studies have demonstrated that honokiol acts as an anxiolytic (anti-anxiety and anti-stress) agent at low doses. When clinically tested against pharmaceutical prescription drugs such as Valium (diazepam), the small amounts of honokiol delivered via standardized magnolia bark extracts appear to be as effective in its anti-anxiety activity, yet not nearly as powerful in its sedative ability. These results have been replicated in over a half dozen animal studies and suggest that magnolia bark extracts would be a clinically effective approach for controlling the detrimental effects of everyday stressors without the tranquilizing side effects of prescription drugs.
Magnolia bark also contains a very powerful terpene, eudesmol, which provides additional benefits as an antioxidant. This terpene added to the magnolol and honokiol components of magnolia (which by themselves are one thousand times more potent than alpha-tocopherol or vitamin E in their antioxidant activity), offer additional heart-health, cellular and anti-aging benefits.
No significant toxicity or adverse effects have been associated with the use of magnolia bark.
Theanine: Theanine is an amino acid found in the leaves of green tea. Theanine offers very different benefits from those imparted by the polyphenol and catechin antioxidants for which green tea is universally valued.
Extracted theanine is unique in that even very small amounts have two very important biochemical effects - it increases the brain's production of alpha waves and acts as a non-sedating relaxant.
Alpha waves occur at 8–13 cycles/second and are the brain waves that indicate “relaxed alertness” and are associated with the highest levels of physical and mental performance. Numerous research studies have proven people who produce more alpha brain waves also have less anxiety, that highly creative people generate more alpha waves when faced with problems, and that elite athletes produce alpha waves on the left side of their brain during their best performances.
As indicated earlier, theanine is also extremely effective for combating tension, stress, and anxiety—without causing drowsiness. When considering the potential benefits of theanine as an anti-stress or anti-cortisol supplement, it is important to distinguish its highly positive non-sedating relaxation benefits from the tranquilizing effects of other natural compounds associated with relaxation such as valerian and kava, which are negative for the biochemistry, in that they are actual mild depressants.
In addition to being considered a relaxing substance, theanine has also been shown to provide benefits for improving learning performance and promoting concentration both in animals and human subjects.
No adverse side effects are associated with theanine supplementation, making it one of the leading natural choices for promoting relaxation without the sedating effects of depressant herbs or over the counter or prescription drugs.
GABA: GABA is a tiny amino acid that is technically considered a neurotransmitter. Neurotransmitters are natural chemicals existing in brain synapses that assist the brain cells in communicating with one another. Each of us has naturally occurring GABA, benefiting us every moment of the day and night in a variety of ways.
GABA is by no means a new discovery. In fact, our knowledge of GABA is very old indeed, as it was first discovered in Berlin in 1883. Like many early discoveries, the interest in GABA died with the scientist that discovered it. GABA gained official scientific recognition in 1955 when a Russian patent on it was granted; a US patent shortly followed. Spurred on by a tremendous number of research studies on GABA, and due to the publication of an article on the positive effects of GABA in the acclaimed Journal Science, GABA is becoming one of the “hottest” substances in biochemical research.
There are literally thousands of clinical studies on GABA showing that oral doses of pure GABA decrease anxiety, increases relaxation and is effective for many in combating panic disorders and depression. GABA is also held in high esteem for its ability to facilitate sleep, especially REM sleep.
Full Spectrum Hemp Oil: The CBD contained in this product is Hydro Hemp ™, a completely water soluble true Full Spectrum Hemp Oil Powder which retains all its cannabinoid, terpenes and phytonutrients in their natural state. Hydro Hemp™ sets a new standard for solubility and bioavailability as it is a true micelle preparation, hydrophobic on the inside yet totally hydrophilic on the outside.Research evidence from dozens of preclinical, human and animal experimental, clinical, and epidemiological studies into CBD’s role as a treatment for anxiety-related disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder strongly indicates CBD has considerable potential as a treatment for multiple anxiety disorders. Additional studies support similarly positive results for other cannabinoids, such as CBN and a wide variety of terpenes derived from cannabis.
